Disease Begins in the Colon

Colon cancer is second only to lung cancer in cause of death among North Americans.

It is estimated that the average person has between 3 and 8 undigested meals in his or her colon at any time. The famous saying “you are what you eat” contains more truth than many think. Colon health in many doctor and specialist’s eyes, is the most important and critical issue for your body’s health.

Our bodies operate from the nutrients taken in through our digestive system. Our digestive system includes everything from the mouth to the rectum. However, it is apparent that our colon (large intestine) is where our focus should be. If your digestive system is not functioning properly, our bodies will fall prey to dis-ease and illness. “Proper function” of our colon, simply put, is effective breakdown of foods, effective absorption of nutrients, and unrestricted, timely removal of waste products that contain toxins from the food we eat. Anything different from that described above means we are inviting disease.

Many doctors and naturopaths have devoted their entire careers to colon therapy. Many specialists suspect an unhealthy colon when patients complain of symptoms such as:

Allergies

Anxiety, worry, tension

Arthritis

Backache

Bad breath

Coated tongue

Cold hands and/or feet

Colds/flu

Constipation

Depression

Difficulty gaining or losing weight

Digestive problems that never clear up

Extended abdomen

Fatigue

Female/menstrual problems

Fibromyalgia

Gas/bloating

Headaches

Hemorrhoids

There are theories that autism starts in the colon when unfriendly bacteria flourish and begin secreting a neurotoxin. Body odor can also be an indication of a toxic colon. There is a close relationship between our body odor and putrefaction within our intestinal tracts. Overall body perspiration, with the possible exception of the underarm perspiration, should not create a body odor problem for the person who bathes regularly. Another good indication of a toxic colon is foot odor. After a proper colon cleanse foot odor will be reduced dramatically.

The food that we eat today is full of preservatives, chemicals, fats, and sugar. All of these will help develop an unhealthy colon and feed such uninvited guests as parasites. Studies show that 75% of the world’s population has parasites within their bodies. A 20-foot tapeworm has been found in a living colon, while parasites small enough to pass through the liver, heart, lungs, spleen, eyes and other organs can also be found ravaging tissue and weakening the immune system.

Compaction of fecal matter on the colon wall prevents absorption through nutrient-receiving tissue.  Compaction of fecal matter is sticky, mucous material sometimes with a hard outer shell making it almost impenetrable.  This mucous material is a safe-haven for parasites to thrive and multiply.  It is important that this material is removed regularly for proper colon health.

Transit time is an issue with many unhealthy colons. Transit time is how long it takes after food is eaten until its residues are expelled through the rectum.  The shorter the transit time, the less the food will putrefy and “stick” to the colon walls and cause toxins to remain in the body for longer periods of time.  The average transit time for people in Western civilization is 65-100 hours.  It takes about 8 hours for food to travel through the stomach and small intestines, and the remainder of the transit time is spent in the colon (large intestines).

At the end of a proper colon cleanse process, the transit time may improve to as little as 24-48 hours provided a proper diet is eaten and a healthy concentration of lactobacteria is maintained.  Lactobacteria are friendly bacteria found in our colon, the most well known being lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium.
